This is such a beautiful eulogy, Derek, for a man with whom I had a complicated relationship, a man I privately called a “walking polemic.” Jason could stir a pot! And, over many years, we shared moments of unguarded humor and warmth—always a welcome shift. This is the first I am hearing of Jason’s death. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a large presence and I know he will be missed. I appreciate you showing me Jason in more dimensionality. I appreciate you honoring his humanity. Much love to you, my friend. You have my warmest and deepest condolences ❤️
Thanks Trish! There is so much more I could write, it is hard to distill a life. He created a lot of turbulence in my relationship with my girlfriend, and she isn’t with me on this trip. I understand that he is a walking polemic to some! So much pain gets passed down from one generation to the next, and I don’t think he ever got out from the shadow of his father. Thinking about that helpless child we all once were is a good way to find compassion. I’m glad I help you see him a little better, and I really appreciate you reading my writings.
